Hippasus of Metapontum

Hippasus of Metapontum
(6th c. BC)
The member of the school of Pythagoras credited with having discovered irrational numbers. According to one legend the discovery was made during a voyage, and Hippasus was then either divinely punished by shipwreck, or perhaps thrown into the sea by other Pythagoreans.
