Aurelius, Marcus

Aurelius, Marcus
(AD 121–180)
Roman emperor from 161 until his death. His philosophical fame rests on the reflections and aphorisms collected in the twelve books of his Meditations . These breathe the highest Stoical principles, without any great philosophical originality but with a particular personal intensity.
