Sade, Donatien Alphonse, marquis de

Sade, Donatien Alphonse, marquis de
(1740–1814)
French pornographer and madman. His nihilism as much as his obsession with the psychopathology of unbridled violent lust has given him a remarkable symbolic role in the thought of writers such as Foucault, the French theorist Gilles Deleuze (1925– ), and others concerned with sexual desire and its relationship to political power . See also wickedness.
