Daughter of Frederick V and Elizabeth Stuart (daughter of James I of England), Sophia was the mother of George I of England. Her sister was
Elizabeth of Bohemia and she was a distinguished scholar in her own right. She is known in philosophy as a close friend and patron of
Leibniz, whose main employment was at the Hanover court.
