eliminative induction
In eliminative induction a number of possible hypotheses concerning some state of affairs is presumed, and rivals are progressively eliminated by new evidence. The process is an idealization, since in practice no closed set of initial theories is usually possible. See Mill's method ; limited independent variety, principle of.
